1. SCOPE
1.1. This procedure lays down steps to be followedfor “Preparation&qualification new Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) and qualification of Welders/Welding operators(WPQ)”.
2. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS
2.1. The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.
2.1.1. ASME Sec. II Part – C
2.1.2. ASME Sec. IX
2.1.3. EN ISO 9606-1,EN 15609-1& EN 15614-1
2.1.4. Client’s Specification (if any)
2.1.5. Applicable Construction code
3. RESPONSIBILITY
3.1. Welding Engineer
3.2. Head Welding
4. PROCEDURE FOR WELDING PROCEDURE SPECIFICATION PREPARATION AND QUALIFICATION
4.1. Identify the requirements asper Client Specifications and relevant drawings prior to initiation of fabrication such as:
4.1.1. Material and Grade Type or its combination (Parent material)
4.1.2. Thickness & diameter range
4.1.3. Additional Requirement like mechanical testing &heat treatment
4.1.4. Applicable Code of Construction
4.2. Identify the Welding processes to be followed and its variables. After reviewing above information, welding Engineer shall identify the number of WPS’s to be prepared.
4.3. Welding Engineer shall prepare the preliminary welding Procedure specifications (pWPS) based on above information’s, applicable code, client specific requirements in suggested format of ASME Sec IX or EN 15609-1 taking into considerations all requisite welding variables.
4.4. The welding engineer shall organize to conduct procedure qualification test based on pWPS.
4.5. Welding Engineer shall issue pWPS to welding station & instruct Welder/Welding operator to follow pWPS parameters for procedure qualification tests.
4.6. Welding Engineer shall fill the welding data sheet during welding. All welding variables such as current, Voltage, travel speed, preheat, inter pass, wire feed rate & mode of metal transfer etc as applicable.
4.7. Once welding, NDT &PWHT (if applicable) is completed; test coupon will be sent to lab for test sample preparation & testing.
4.8. VT shall be done as per QW 144 for ASME SEC IX for ASME Job & EN 970& EN 571-1 for job according European standard or as specified by client.
4.9. If tests are found satisfactory, test piece stamping shall be doneas per ASME SEC IX or EN 15614-1
4.10. Once marking done, TPI/AI stamping shall transfer to all the test coupons before cutting.
4.11. Sample preparation for mechanical test asapplicable shall be done as per ASME Sec IX QW150, QW 160,QW 170 or EN 895,EN 910,EN 875,EN 1321 & EN 1043-1.
4.12. The extent of testing shall be as per applicable code and client requirement.
4.13. Once samples are prepared, Welding Engineer shall verify its dimensions & offer to AI/TPI for same (as required).
4.14. Testing shall be done in NABL LAB, in-house lab or any other lab recommended by client.
4.15. Lab test reports shall be reviewed by welding Engineer.
4.16. Welding Engineer shall take decision of acceptance or rejection based on ASME Sec IX or EN 15614-1.
4.17. If all the test results meet these specified requirements, Welding Engineer shall prepare PQR in suggested format of ASME Sec IX or EN 15614. Heat input value shall be computed and indicated in PQR Format.
4.18. After establishing PQR, Welding Engineer shall update WPS & releasefor production.
4.19. Welding Engineer shall update list of qualified WPS’s.
5. PROCEDURE FOR WELDER/ WELDING OPERATOR QUALIFICATION :
5.1. If procedure qualification is successful as per clause 4 above, the welder is granted approval for the process and within the parameters of qualification.
5.2. For new Welder Approval, tests shall be conducted by welding a tests coupon with parameters as per qualified welding procedure.
5.3. Test coupon identification shall be done as per ASME section IX/ISO: 9606-1.
5.4. Once marking is done, TPI/AI marking shall be transferred before cutting( if applicable)
5.5. Sample preparation for applicable physical tests shall be done as per ASME Sec IX/ISO: 9606-1
5.6. Once sample is prepared, Welding Engineer shall verify its dimensions & offer to TPI/AI for Review/Stamping as applicable.
5.7. Testing shall be done in NABL approved lab,in-house lab or other lab recommended by client.
5.8. After completion of tests, Welding Engineer shall verify test reports & shall take decision of acceptance or rejection based on ASME Sec IX or EN 9606
5.9. Welders’ tests coupon can also be subjected to radiography examination in lieu of Mechanical Tests as per applicable code.
5.10. Record of Welders/Welding Operator qualification i.e. WPQ shall be prepared.
5.11. List of Qualified Welders & Welding Operator shall be updated.
5.12. Correspondence of key clauses of ASME IX and EN are listed below.
